Las fiestas falleras se celebran en España en la ciudad de Valencia y diferentes poblaciones de la Comunidad Valenciana están catalogadas como “fiestas de Interés Turístico Internacional” y tienen lugar del 15 al 19 de marzo de cada año.
El comienzo de cinco días de fuego, cohetes y festejos alcanza su punto culminante en la noche del 19 de marzo, dia de San José, con la cremà , noche en la que estos grandiosos monumentos de cartón-piedra se convierten en cenizas.
The Fallas Festival is celebrated in Valencia, Spain. Many of the Valencia communities that hold this festivity are recognized as official International Tourist Attractions. They take place every year from March 15 – 19. A Falla is a statue made of papier mâché, wood, and cardboard. The Fallas have a specific theme, to make fun of people, current events, or human characteristics.
The Festivities start with five days of fireworks and celebrations and end on the night of March 19. Day of Saint Joseph with an event known as the ‘cremà’. On this night, these grand creations are set on fire and reduced to ashes
Se cuenta que la fiesta de las Las Fallas tiene su origen en los artesanos y, muy especialmente, en los carpinteros de Valencia. Durante el invierno, para aprovechar las últimas jornadas de luz, se utilizaban unos candiles que se colgaban de un artefacto denominados "parots", parecidos a un candelabro de varios brazos de troncos o tablas de madera. Con la llegada del buen tiempo, la víspera de San José se quemaban estos aparatos a la puerta de las casas para festejar a su patrono. Con el tiempo al parot se le fueron añadiendo prendas viejas y otros objetos , tomando la forma de un espantapájaro. Cada vez fue adquiriendo más rasgos humanos, representando a algún personaje popular. Así surgió el "ninot" o muñeco, que comenzaría a aparecer acompañado de otras figuras.
It is believed that the Fallas originate with the woodworkers of Valencia. During the winter months, oil lamps were used to prolong the working days. These were hung from artifacts known as ‘parots’; similar to a candleholder that were made of pieces of wood. When the better weather arrived and on the eve Saint Joseph’s day, these candleholders were set on fire to celebrate their patron saint. Later, these ‘parots’ became more elaborate and were made to resemble scarecrows and eventually to look human like. The ‘ninot’ or doll was created and started to show with other figures.

Las fallas tienen un tema concreto, aluden a personas, sucesos o comportamientos, el tono sátiro y burlesco de las fallas se complementó con la perfección de las mismas a nivel plástico, dando lugar a los artistas falleros.
Actualmente las fallas se construyen de papel, cartón y madera, se desarrollan en los talleres durante todo el año partiendo de una maqueta a pequeña escala.
Presently there are artisans who are dedicated solely to the creation of Fallas. These are made in workshops and they may take up to a year for artisans to complete.

El día del Padre en España se celebra el día 19 de marzo, que es el día de San José, el padre de Jesús.
Sé que en Estados Unidos esta fiesta se celebra en Junio, pero buscando datos para este artículo, me he encontrado con que hay otros muchos países donde también se celebra el 19 de marzo. En Bolivia, Honduras, Italia, Liechtenstein, Macao, Portugal y Andorra.
In Spain, Father's Day is celebrated the 19th of March, which is Saint Joseph's Day, father of Jesus. I know that in the US this feast is celebrated in June, but while looking for information about this article I found that in many countries, like Bolivia, Honduras, Italy, Liechtenstein, Macao, Portugal and Andorra it is celebrated on March 19th as well.
En general es una fiesta familiar. Nos reunimos, comemos juntos, y compramos regalos para nuestros padres.
El problema es que esto termina siempre en las ventas, las ofertas especiales día del padre, etc y a veces nos parece que todo es puramente comercial.
In general it is a family feast. We gather, we eat together and give some gifts to our fathers. Problem is, this always comes down to sales, special offers for Father's Day, etc. and sometimes it seems it is a purely commercial event.
Una parte bonita de este día, y que solo disfrutamos los que tenemos niños pequeños, es que en los colegios, siempre preparan algún regalo para los Papás.
Es divertido, porque son manualidades, y lo preparan con mucha ilusión encantados de regalar algo que han hecho ellos mismos.
A nice thing about this day, specially for those of us with smaller children. is that they always make something special in school to give their dads. This is fun because they are usually hand crafts and they are made with great joy, delighted to give something made by themselves.

To the members and followers of Etsy, and to those that enjoy hand-made crafts, it will surely be fun to think about the great interest with which these things are prepared, and the amount of work that it represents to organize at the school the dozens of gifts made by little children. Specially using glue, cutting and sewing!

Mi nombre es Marcela Burgos y tengo mi tienda en Etsy desde hace unos 6 meses, bajo el nombre de "art by chela", donde vendo algunas ilustraciones, cursos y revistas.
My name is Marcela Burgos and I've had my Etsy shop for about 6 months uner the name "art by chela", where I sell some illustrations, tutorials and books.
Vivo en Barcelona, España y me hace muy feliz poder caminar por sus calles y convivir con gente muy creativa y artistas de todas partes del mundo. Trabajo toda la semana en una tienda donde se enseña Patchwork, bolillos, punto cruz, labores de punto y pronto manualidades para niños. Dos veces a la semana estudio de noche ilustración de álbum ilustrado cuentos infantiles) en la Escola de la Dona, una de las escuelas mas antiguas y creativas de Barcelona. Crear escenas para cuentos y pintar la imaginación para niños me parece un trabajo totalmente gratificante. La escola esta ubicada en el Barri Gotic, ó barrio gótico y se pueden imaginar la arquitectura del lugar, las iglesias y callejuelas detenidas en el tiempo.
I live in Barcelona, Spain and I love to walk along its streets and coexist with such creative people and artists from all over the world. I work during the week in a store where they teach Patchwork, bolillos, cross stitch, embroidery and soon children crafts. I study children's book illustration twice a week at the Escola de la Dona, one of the oldest and most creative schools of Barcelona. I find so gratifying to create story illustrations and create imaginary scenes for kids. The school is in the Barri Gotic, or Gothic neighborhood, and you can imagine the architecture of the place with its churches and little streets suspended in time.

La PedreraCada día cuando salgo al almuerzo pienso en cual sería el mejor lugar por donde pasear hoy y conocer. Hay cientos de lugares para visitar en Barcelona. El Parque Güell es uno de mis preferidos porque puedo ir caminando desde mi trabajo. Es una de las obras más universales del arquitecto Gaudí. El parque Güell es, como la Sagrada Familia o la casa La Pedrera, un fenómeno de masas y un lugar clave en la iconografía barcelonesa. Apenas si se pueden subir por las escaleras que rodean al dragón de Gaudí. Una multitud de personas con diferentes rostros, colores y lenguajes, sacándose fotos amontonadas junto a esa enorme lagartija de cemento y trocitos de cerámica multicolor. Los techos y las paredes de un recinto tipo Partenón, están armoniosamente decorados con trocitos de platos rotos, botellas, cerámicas, losetas, tazas, platitos y quien sabe que cosillas más hermosas encontró Gaudí para formar un mosaico abovedado, único y bello.
Everyday when I go out to lunch I think, what would be the best place to walk around and visit? There are hundreds of places to visit in Barcelona. The Güell Park is one of my favorites, because I can walk there from my job. It is one of the most universal masterpieces of the architect Gaudí. Like the Sacred Family or the La Pedrera house, the Güell Park is a mass phenomenon and a key place in the barcelonic iconography. You can hardly walk up the stairs that surround the Gaudí Dragon. A multitude of different faces, colors and languages gather around and take pictures of this gigantic concrete lizard with its multicolor ceramic shards. The ceiling and the walls of a kind of Parthenon is harmonically decorated with pieces of broken dishes, bottles, ceramic vases, tiles and who knows what other beautiful little thigs that Gaudí found to create this unique and wonderful vault.

Me gusta también pasear por la Rambla desde la Plaza de Catalunya hasta el malecón, donde entro al centro comercial Maremagnun por la Rambla de Mar, que es un puente de hierro y madera, como un barco que se gira y abre cuando entra algun bote al Real Club Marítim. Allí hay un acuarium precioso, L'Aquàrium. Por el centro hay varios museos que no se pueden dejar de visitar como el museo de Picasso ó el Museo Nacional D’Art de Catalunya. Este mes fui a visitar la exposición del artista español Joaquín Sorolla cuyops cuadros decoran The Hispanic Society of America.
I also like to wander by the Rambla, from the Plaza de Catalunya to the malecon, where I enter the Maremagnum commercial center by the Rambla del Mar, which is an iron and wooden bridge, which like a ship girates and opens when the boats enter the Real Club Marítim. There you can find a beautiful aquarium, L'Aquàrium. Downtown there are many museums that you cannot fail to visit, such as the Picasso Museum or the Museo Nacional D’Art de Catalunya. This month I went to visit the exposition of Joaquín Sorolla , an Spanish painter whose paintings decorate The Hispanic Society of America.

Pero se descubre una ciudad artística genial caminando por el centro, la arquitectura modernista y art noveau es impresionante, no solo lo más representativo de la ciudad como la casa Batlló, La Sagrada Familia, la casa La Pedrera, las obras de Miró y varios palacios y museos, hay edificios que van desde residencias particulares, farmacias antiguas o tiendas que me dejan impresionada con sus Vitreaux y la forja art noveau o modernista de sus puertas y ventanas. Ni hablarles de los castillos medievales del siglo IX, X y XI que he visitado. Caminar por las calles empedradas de una ciudad románica es de cuento, mirar hacia arriba sobre sus enormes murallas y apreciar cada detalle de su arquitectura es algo que adoro y repito cada fin de semana en el que puedo salir con mi esposo y mis hijos a pasear.
But you can find a truly artistic city walking around downtown, with its modernist architecture and its impressive Art Noveau. Not only the most representative, such as the Batlló house, La Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, the work of Miró and the many palaces and museums, but also residential homes, old pharmacies and shops that leave me so impressed with their Vitreaux and Art Nouveau ironwork of their doors and windows. And I am not even talking about the IX, X and XI medieval castles the I visited. Walking around the cobbled streets of such a romantic city is like walking into a story. I love to look up over the enormous battlements and appreciate each architectural detail and I do so over and over again, each time that I go out with my husband and my children for a walk.
